January Plans

For the January Teen POWer meeting, we broke into 2 groups. The READTeens toured the Special Collections room. The highlights seem to be looking at the newspaper for the day when JFK was assassinated. They saw the ads with the latest fashions and prices to put history in context. While that was going on, the e.teens discussed technical career options with a representative from the New England Institute of Technology. After that, we all discussed places we'd like to volunteer for our community service project that we'll schedule for the spring. More on that when we know...

**Special Recognition this month goes to Shekinah R. for giving her Creating Readers Students a pizza party as incentive for coming to several sessions in a row. Great idea Shekinah!!

Workshop on Finding Funding for College

Our first workshop was presented by Gail Mance-Rios, the Deputy Director of the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority. She provided a lot of useful information about filing the FAFSA, when to file, and common mistakes that people make. 17 teens attended the workshop and had some fantastic questions such as:

-How is a loan considered financial aid?
-How long will it take to pay back the loans?
-Will it hurt you to transfer schools?

She also stressed that everyone should apply for financial aid because you never know when your situation might change and money may not be available if you miss the application deadline.

You can apply after January 1st, so start filling out the FAFSA online over vacation!!

November Meeting

Mr. Wyncoop, an English teacher at Times Squared Academy, came to talk with Teen POWer members about his unique perspective on life and how he arrived where he is today. He talked about choice and commended our teens for doing something different than everybody else by working as e.teens and READTeens at the library.

What do you think about choice? What plans do you have for your future, and how are your daily choices helping you get where you want to be?

This month things are starting to get moving for the Teen POWer program...

At our last meeting we decided on the first workshop which will be about Finding Funding for College, on November 27th.

The e.teens discussed their roles as computer monitors and made a list of educational websites for kids to use while they're at the library.

READTeens decided how they would like to use a $500 grant for the Creating Readers Program. They want to have a book fair event with face painting and free books for all of their readers!

Our next meeting is November 16 at 3:30.
